Behind the Lens: a relaxed headshot session

South Melbourne has this really special vibe—it’s full of cute little streets, inviting coffee shops, and colourful urban spots that make it an awesome place for a headshot session. Recently, I got to hang out with Vicki for a shoot, and she was such a natural. Her easygoing personality made the whole experience so much fun. Let me take you behind the scenes as we explored three different locations and captured some amazing shots that really made her shine.

First stop: Coffee shop comfort

We kicked things off at a local coffee shop, a quintessential South Melbourne spot with rustic charm. The goal here was simple: to capture Vicki at her most relaxed and authentic.

With a latte in hand and plenty of laughs along the way, Vicki’s warmth really came through. The cozy café lighting was just right, making her smile and relaxed vibe shine. As she sipped her coffee, I snapped a bunch of candid shots that captured her natural confidence and friendly energy which is exactly what you want in a great headshot!

Next: the walking shot

From the coffee shop, we ventured outdoors for a dynamic walking shot. South Melbourne’s streets provided an ideal mix of urban texture and natural light.

Walking shots can be a challenge to get right—it’s all about finding the perfect pace and maintaining good posture. I coached Vicki to take slow, purposeful steps, keeping her head high and her shoulders relaxed. It didn’t take long for her to master it; she moved with such grace and confidence that the results were stunning. The rhythm of her movement, paired with the vibrant city backdrop, brought an added layer of energy and sophistication to the shots.

Final stop: the perfect backdrop

For our final location, we hunted for a coloured wall to complement Vicki’s outfit—a stunning olive-green top that beautifully matched her eyes.

After passing a few neutral-toned walls that felt too bland, we stumbled upon the perfect coloured backdrop. The warm, earthy tones of the wall harmonised beautifully with the olive green, creating a cohesive, visually appealing frame. This setting allowed Vicki’s natural features to take centre stage while adding depth and richness to the images.

A headshot session isn’t just about taking a bunch of photos—it’s about making you feel comfortable and confident in front of the camera. That’s exactly what happened with Vicki, and you can totally see it in every shot. Each spot we picked brought out a different side of her, giving us a set of photos that are as fun and vibrant as she is.

Oh, and a photo from this session was even featured in the Herald Sun VWeekend!

If you’re thinking about headshots, here’s the secret: don’t stress, enjoy the process, and trust your photographer to capture the real you. Every session tells a story—let’s make your story is next!
