Tips on how to keep your children happy and engaged during a family photoshoot

The number one thing I would say is to stay relaxed and patient! Children may have different reactions during a photoshoot. Some enjoy being in front of the camera, while others prefer playtime. Keep in mind that age plays a role, with older kids generally being more responsive to directions. Embrace a playful atmosphere, especially when younger kids are involved.

Be adaptable and go with the flow. Avoid stressing or showing frustration, as it can lead to stubborn behaviour. Don’t insist on forced smiles or specific poses. Instead, maintain a lighthearted and playful atmosphere, allowing your children’s genuine personalities to shine through.

Engage with your children in a playful manner. Follow their lead and be open to their interests and preferences. If they want to dance instead of sitting for a photo, join them and redirect later. Playful interactions, like tickling, spinning, and twirling, create authentic and action-filled shots.

Allow short breaks for kids if needed. Sometimes, children may want to run off briefly. Let them know it’s okay and that you’ll be there when they’re ready. Often, they’ll return on their own.

Consider offering rewards after the photoshoot, if your children respond positively to this approach. Suggest a family activity, like enjoying ice cream together, as the reward.

For Babies and Toddlers:

Schedule the session at a suitable time when your child is most active and alert. Ensure babies are well-rested and fed beforehand, and avoid scheduling near nap or bedtime. Understand that very young children may not follow directions, but they can still enjoy the session with a cheerful and playful atmosphere.

Explore the option of incorporating props or activities like bubbles or music to keep your child engaged and entertained during the photoshoot. Let me know if you’d like me to include any specific props.
