As a portrait photographer, I often find myself in some spectacular locations, like a recent shoot at The Block in Phillip Island. The shoot was for a solar panel installer – Murcott Electrical whose company had installed the solar panels and inverters for all the houses in this iconic project. Capturing their work while telling their story through portraits presented an exciting challenge, I wanted to share this behind-the-scenes look!
From the moment I stepped on-site, I knew this shoot would be special. The houses were stunning, blending modern design with sustainable energy solutions. Naturally, the goal was to capture portraits that highlighted the connection between the solar expert and their work.
However, there was one tricky aspect: finding a way to feature the solar panels in the background. Since we weren’t allowed access to the roofs for safety reasons, I had to get creative! I walked the property, exploring angles and perspectives to frame the solar panels while staying grounded—literally. After experimenting with different spots, I found a few vantage points where the panels could peek into the frame, giving the portraits the context they needed.
Why behind-the-scenes moments matter
This shoot reminded me why I love photography—it’s not just about the photos but the stories they tell. From problem-solving on-site to discovering the craftsmanship behind The Block, every moment added depth to the final images.
Portrait photography is about connection, whether it’s between a person and their passion, a space and its design, or a client and their audience. I feel lucky to have captured all of that in one incredible day. If you’re a professional or a business looking to tell your story through photography, I’d love to help bring your vision to life. Let’s create something unforgettable together!
Despite the technical challenges, the day was filled with laughter and creativity as we worked together to find the perfect settings and compositions. With the backdrop of Phillip Island’s serene landscape and the sleek, eco-friendly homes, every shot felt like a story in itself.
